Allison Laux
Partner, VP Strategy and Insights at Quizative Inc.
Allison is a founding partner at Quizative and leads the Strategy + Insight practice. She is an integrated communications specialist with 18 years experience – 16 of those years working with digital media.
Allison has been an innovator in digital marketing from its inception. Through the years she has specialized in relationship marketing and brand building. She has also worked in virtually every marketing medium and takes a media-agnostic approach to creative and communications planning.
Allison drives Quizative’s curiosity engine and believes that to understand the customer experience, it is best to ‘live it’. This ‘method’ approach currently has her playing ‘first person shooter’ games and reading Harlequin novels. In the past she earned a motorcycle license to get closer to the subject and earned the nickname ‘wheelie girl.’
She has worked for Ogilvy & Mather, tattoo direct + digital, and Wunderman on multi-channel communication with global blue-chip clients in the B2B and B2C space. Client experience includes Invest in Kids, Canadian Management Centre, Rogers, Wyeth, Kraft, Franklin Templeton Investments, Mercedes-Benz, Harley-Davidson, Nestle, American Express, Robin Hood and IBM.
She is a prolific traveler and explorer. Last year she herded cattle with gauchos in Argentina and this year volcanic activity left her stranded in Tunisia after riding Arabian horses in the Sahara.

Invest in Kids came to Quizative with a mission to transform the way they educate parents.
The insights are that people dream of being a great parent. However, when the baby comes, new parents are unprepared, overwhelmed and exhausted. They then realize they lack the skills and confidence to achieve the level of parenthood to which they aspire. That’s where Invest in Kids comes in. They are a national charity dedicated to educating and supporting parents. They have expertise on providing parental training in simple and achieveable steps. Quizative brought the Invest in Kids’ printed content to life with a series of video moments distributed through:

Where do you see video streaming’s place evolving in transmedia experiences?
| Allison Laux: | We’ll consume more video on mobile. Video viewing on smart phones, iPhones and iPads is in its infancy and will rise quickly in the next few years. We’ll search for product demos before making purchases digitally or in bricks-and-mortar; and then watch the how-to-video at home when using the product for the first time. We’ll search for recipes on our computers at the office; email/SMS the ingredients list to our phone; and then view the recipe video demo on our iPad in the kitchen. |
How do you see video ranking in the future as a preferred digital media channel?
| Allison Laux: | Unless literacy makes a sudden comeback, video will be the preferred communication medium across all channels. Digital channels will continue to batter print publications as people abandon prose in favour of video. TV content will still be rich but will be watched on demand via the internet rather than cable. Marketers will invest less in web pages and volumes of content and more in short, simple video communications. |

Why are Canadians enjoying video content so much these days?
| Manuel Rodriguez: | High-speed Internet is now widely accessible in Canada, subscribers have dramatically increased. I believe that this is the main reason that Internet usage is more popular than TV viewership.
CTV has successfully streamed the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and CBC is scoring big with soccer fans, as they are currently streaming live Soccer Worldcup games. |

| Manuel Rodriguez: | We recently created a Video Gallery for one of our clients in the Healthcare sector. This series of videos explains the Best Practices for Mobile Nurses. It has helped instruct them on how to be more efficient on the road by accessing valuable clinical information via the use of Mobile Devices.
I like it because it’s exciting to see conservative industries like Pharmaceuticals embrace new technologies and methods to communicate more effectively with their audiences. The link is proprietary but the project concept is important for us to mention. |
Tell us about the work you do with video technology and why it’s unique in your market?
| Manuel Rodriguez: |
Unikron is always pushing towards innovative Touch and Interactive Virtual Tour capabilities.
We are integrating image-based 3D object modelling to create more dynamic 360 degree spherical panoramic navigation using rich Flash features. We are also incorporating Multi-Touch enabled screens to improve viewer control and overall experience. The use of online video presentations is not yet being used to its full potential. For example: We were recently hired by one of the largest branding and environmental design agencies in North America to develop a new corporate website. We saw a potential to use video technology to showcase their Retail Environment Design projects: Video based Walk-troughs would allow viewers to get a better sense of the intended consumer experience at the store level. Our client understood the value and effectiveness to this approach, and we are now producing project videos for all of their global offices. |
What site do you use most to check out video content and why?
| Manuel Rodriguez: | The 2010 WorldCup is happening right now in South Africa, so everyone at Unikron is glued to CBC. Personally, I love the NY Times video briefs, and Tennis lesson on YouTube.
However, the videos that I have to check the most are our weekly Live Webcasts that we do for Bell and other clients. – http://unikron.com/dev/bell/CEseminar |

Filemobile recently had the pleasure to work with Toronto’s Mesh Media Conference to power the video and user generated site (http://media.meshconference.com/). This site served as the video hub to find out what was planned and going on throughout the conference.
We think Mesh took an interesting approach by bringing together their formal conference content such as videos of workshops and sessions, with user submitted coverage of the event, including ad hoc interviews, shots from the crowd, etc. This content, mixed with the ability for everyone to interact through creating a profile, connecting via Facebook and commenting give people a broader feel for what is going on at the event. And its not limited to those in attendance … anyone can tune in online and see what’s going on at Mesh. |

| Chris Becker: |
Video for Filemobile is a key part of our overall approach to user generated content and has been a part of our approach since we started business in 2006.
Its great to see all the ways in which people are embracing video on the web … so much opportunity for experimentation. Our focus has been on utilizing video to capture the feel for an event or situation … but from a user perspective. Putting the power of video into the hands of everyone, and letting them share it wherever the like. A lot of what we do is about enabling people to share, comment and rate what video they see on the web. Much of this focus has been on consumer and public content but more and more we are seeing opportunities and interest in this type of user generated video in business, not for profit and other sectors, for use with employees, partners, suppliers, volunteers, politicians and more. Here are some recent articles on our perspective of the potential of video | Video, Not Just for TV Anymore: |

How do you see video ranking in the future as a preferred digital media channel?
| Chris Becker: | Video would seem to be climbing the top in terms of digital media. Either as a standalone channel, or as a way to complement cross-channel programming which can include text, video, images and more.
Video is also being integrated more with the social media sites and activities going on in web and mobile. An example of this is our recent partnership with Brightcove, a market leader in the Online Video Player (OVP) space (http://ow.ly/1MvuP). With Brightcove, we include our user generated content and social interaction products such as ‘multimedia commenting’ with Brightcove video player products.
